Chapter Eight

All the strength drained out of Adrian’s legs. Head spinning, he lowered himself carefully back into his chair and focused on the television, where Vinita was speaking to the reporter.

“No comment,” she said, biting off each word. Her expression was stony. She kept walking, not casting so much as a glance at the reporter.

“Ma!” Charles cried happily, smacking both little fists on his plastic highchair tray.

“Yes, baby,” Mallory murmured. “Mommy’s on TV.”

On the screen, Noreen trotted after Vinita, undeterred by her brush-off. “An anonymous source within the department tells me that they and another prisoner witnessed Mr. Whisnant vanishing into thin air, and that you were called in to evaluate that prisoner’s sanity. You must have some idea of what happened.”

Mallory covered her mouth with both hands. “Oh, my God. No. Not again.”

Like her brother. Adrian’s heart went out to her, but he had no idea what to say. Not that it mattered. Mallory wasn’t paying him any attention. All her focus remained on the television, where the drama continued to play out.

Vinita stopped, brows pulling together and eyes flashing. “Ms. Gorham, as a professional psychiatrist, I am not in the habit of discussing my patients with the likes of you. I will not tell you who I am here to see, what we spoke of, or what—if anything—I might know about this disappearance, because it’s none of your damn business. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I would like to get home to my family.”

Noreen stepped into Vinita’s path as she tried to leave. “But, Doctor—”

“Ms. Gorham. Get out of my way.” Vinita spoke calmly, but Adrian heard the fury hiding behind her cold tone.

The reporter pursed her lips and stepped aside. Adrian watched Vinita storm out of frame without listening to what the reporter was saying. He still couldn’t get his head around what he’d just heard. Was it true? Had Darren Whisnant really disappeared? Had it happened the way Noreen Gorham’s anonymous source said it had? If so, did that mean Rochelle’s murder was somehow tied into this whole business with parallel realities?

And how did any of it fit in with his quest to find Greg? Or did it?

Shit.

He peered at Mallory with concern. “Mallory? Are you okay?” She didn’t look okay. She looked shell-shocked, frightened and angry all at once.

She blinked several times, drew a long, deep breath and blew it out. “No, dammit. This is like Joseph all over again, and I hate it.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“Thanks.” One corner of her mouth hitched upward. “Maybe this time we can figure it all out and stop it. I don’t think I’ll ever see my brother again, but if we can get your man back, at least that’ll be something.”

“Yeah.” Since he wasn’t sure he could talk about that right now without breaking down, he shifted the subject sideways. “I can’t help wondering why it was Darren Whisnant who vanished. That can’t be a coincidence.”

Mallory gave him a curious look as she went back to salad-making. “Why? Is he connected to you and Greg somehow?”

“In a way.
